Frederick II of Swabia was an unparalleled horse breeder. In one of his essays, historian Franco Porsia of the University of Bari says that Frederick’s horses were the best of his time. Horses were considered to be a strategic weapon and their export from the Kingdom was forbidden and severely punished. In his treatise De Medicina Equorum, which was probably written at Frederick’s request, the noble squire Giordano Ruffo listed the physical characteristics of the ideal horse. His work is still a valuable point of reference for the Italian contemporary equestrian culture.
